Is social media marketing a fad or here to stay?

I do not believe that social media marketing is a fad and is an outlet that is here to stay. Even though social media is new to the scene it's power and influence has been great. According to the video on youtube, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VInXr2Sl2ao, that while it took radio 38 years to reach 50 million viewers, television 13 years, Internet 4 years it only took less than a year for Facebook to reach 200 million users in less than a year. More people spend time on social networks than other sites. It seems that in such a short time social networks are a way of life for much of the population. I am sure many people would find it hard to deal if sites such as Facebook and Youtube were shutdown.  I think that marketers and businesses are foolish not to take part in social media. Not only does it cost little in comparison to other medias it has the power to generate conversation as well as vast recognition very quickly. I believe that social media will keep evolving to something bigger and bigger and is defiantly here to stay.

  1. You mention that you're sure people would find it hard to cope if certain social media sites were shut down. Check out this article about a study done where 200 college students went without social media for 24 hours. http://wapo.st/bmNt7a

  2. I am NOT surprised about the article Katie posted, but at the same time I am shocked! It is incredible to me how dependent we all are on such instant information and a constant need for connection to others and the outside world. It used to take days for people to contact family or friends, but we have an insatiable need to constantly be in contact with others which is almost sickening. It makes it seem that we are too "bored" with ourselves or too afraid to be alone that we need others to make us feel good about ourselves. I am no stranger to this. I know if my cell phone battery dies and I am not around my charger for a while, I get antsy and try to think of a way I can get my phone charged so I can make a call or get my text messages. The article gives a lot of insight into how "addicted" our society has become.

  3. I am not surprised with that article either! I would like to think that I would not be one of those people but just the other day I forgot my iPod when going to class and felt myself missing having music playing in my ears while walking to class. I believe our generations addiction to facebook, texting, etc. supports the idea that social media isn't going anywhere!

  4. I know I would be one of these "addicts." I use social media several times a day, and am constantly texting. Antoher thing: Have you ever noticed how when put in an uncomfortable situation, we turn to our phones to play with to keep us occupied? For instance, when a class is meeting for the first time, and no one really knows each other, pay attention to how many students will immediately resort to fidgeting with their phones. I know I do it to avoid any awkward conversations. I agree with Chelsea in that we're a pretty sad culture with how dependent we are on technology, but it is what it is I guess.

  6. That's a great article Katie! I don't think I have the will power to do it. I know without a doubt I spend more time on social media websites than anywhere else. It's the feeling of being connected and not missing out on anything that I don't want to lose. I think the companies that are skeptical about putting advertising dollars into social media want more cold, hard facts. They want a ridiculous amount of evidence showing that social media is changing the world. Shouldn't it be obvious by how we use technology? It will only take time before they jump on the bandwagon.
